PTFE Etching Process

Will Etching Change the Properties of My Tubing?

After etching and drying, a white crust may form, which can hinder bonding. To address this, the residue can be effectively removed by dipping the material in isopropyl alcohol, acetone, or ethyl alcohol.

How Should I Store Etched Tubing?

Etched fluoropolymers have a tendency to attract molecules from the air to address their electron deficiency, which can weaken the surface etching over time. To prevent this, it’s crucial to store all etched materials in their original sealed bags. Is Darker Color Indicative of Better Etching Quality?

Not necessarily. In the image below, both tubes have undergone etching and exhibit nearly the same contact angle. Despite this, their colors differ significantly. Color alone doesn’t reliably indicate etching quality. To address this, Aokeray provides etch certifications with every shipped order.

What is the solution of PTFE etch?

Heat Shrink Shelf / Dimensional Life

PTFE and FEP heat shrink tubing conforming to AS23053 have a minimum dimensional life of four years when stored at their specified temperatures. This feature means that these heat shrinks can be used as long as they’re expanded inside diameter (ID) and recovered wall ID remain within the tolerances specified in AS23053/11 and AS23053/12.

Information needed for an etched PTFE liner review

Specify the liner ID, DA, wall thickness, lunghezza e tolleranze; the surface to be etched; the downstream bonding or lamination process; storage and handling expectations; inspection or surface-test method; quantità del prototipo; domanda annuale; and required documentation.

Etching changes the treated PTFE surface so it can be evaluated for bonding. Bond strength still depends on the adhesive or polymer system, surface age and handling, assembly preparation, process conditions and final-device validation. A quoted component should therefore define the treated surface, measurable acceptance method and packaging requirements.
