For medical device engineers, PTFE tubing is selected mainly for one reason: it provides a smooth, low-friction inner surface that helps guidewires, devices or fluids move through a small lumen with less resistance. In catheter shaft construction, PTFE is commonly used as the inner liner, while Pebax, nylon, PU, braid or coil reinforcement are used outside the liner to build the final shaft structure.
