Typical applications include the lining of chemical processing tanks or other equipment used in harsh environments. When bonding is required, sodium ammonia is used.Etching is performed by placing the fluoropolymer tubing in a sodium solution. The resulting chemical reaction removes fluorine molecules from the carbon-fluorine backbone of the fluoropolymer leaving carbon atoms that are deficient in electrons. When the etched surface of the material is exposed to air, oxygen molecules, water vapor, and hydrogen allow restoration of the electrons. This restoration process results in a group of organic molecules that enables adhesion

When PTFE needs to be bonded to another surface, such as a stainless steel body for a medical device, etching uses a mixture of sodium and ammonia that is formulated to produce a bondable surface quickly and efficiently. Sodium/ammonia etching services meet all applicable commercial, military and federal specifications for surface treatments of all fluoropolymers including: PTFE, PFA, FEP, ETFE, PCTFE, PVDF, PVF and ECTFE. The process can be accomplished on one or more surfaces or selectively within close tolerances.
